Mersey Rowing Club made a triumphant return to the Fours Head of the River this November — the first time the club has competed at the event in at least five years, and possibly as many as ten. And what a comeback it was.
Three Mersey crews — two women’s and one men’s — took on the Tideway and delivered performances the club can be genuinely proud of.
The Crews
Men’s Crew
Marcus (bow), Callum, Luke, Christian — coxed by Men’s Captain Jess
The men’s four had a dramatic race, complete with “a takeover, a crash, and a photo of us boating next to Cambridge,” as Jess put it.
Despite being ploughed into by a quad that pushed them for a full 50 metres, the crew dug deep and still managed to gain two places on their starting position.
Jess summed up her feelings simply:
“Hugely, HUGELY proud of my boys… The boys worked incredibly hard and I am so so very proud.”
Women’s Crew 1
Lydia (bow), Charlotte, Sam, Lucy — coxed by Tara
Women’s Crew 2
Jess (bow), Giulia, Ellie, Lilly — coxed by Denisa
Both women’s crews delivered excellent results on the Tideway, with one boat moving up two places and the other climbing one. Women’s Captain Charlotte couldn’t have been happier:
“Both crews did so well… Sending not only one crew but TWO to Fours is a huge, huge achievement and I am so happy with the work everyone has put in to get to this point. We are in a strong place for WEHORR and I can’t wait to see what the women’s squad has in store.”
A Proud Return
For Mersey Rowing Club, returning to Fours Head after such a long absence — and doing so with three dedicated, competitive crews — marks a significant milestone. The performances, the teamwork, and the spirit shown across the squad have set a powerful tone for the season ahead.
Here’s to building on this momentum, and to many more appearances on the Tideway. Mersey is well and truly back.
