Mersey Rowing Club had their very first Merseygatta on 9th August 2025

This weekend saw the launch of something new and very special at Mersey Rowing Club – our first ever Merseygatta, an internal day of time trial racing that brought the whole club together.

The idea was simple: set up a series of short races across different boat classes, give everyone a chance to race as much as they wanted, and see what happened.

The result?

A full day of hard-fought racing, plenty of medals, and more than a few surprises along the way.

Racing All Day Long

From the first division to the last, rowers threw themselves into the challenge. Some athletes took on a single race, while others pushed their limits, racing in as many as five different line-ups throughout the day.

It was a true test of stamina as well as speed – and a brilliant showcase of the club’s depth of talent.

Every category was hotly contested.

We saw razor-thin margins separating crews, with several medals decided by just a few seconds.

The atmosphere on the bank was just as competitive as the action on the water, with teammates-turned-rivals willing each other on.

A Medal Haul to Remember

By the end of the day, our medal table was stacked with proud winners across all boat classes. For many, this was their first taste of racing – and for others, it was a chance to sharpen their skills in a friendly but competitive setting.

The cheers, smiles, and photo finishes showed exactly what Merseygatta was all about: celebrating rowing at every level.

The Grand Finale – Mixed Quads Showdown

The highlight of the day came in the closing event – the mixed quads, where juniors and adults were drawn together in a head-to-head showdown.

In what can only be described as the upset of the day, our junior quad powered their way past every single mixed adult crew to take the win.

It was a performance full of grit, speed, and no small amount of pride – proving that the future of Mersey Rowing Club is in very good hands.

More Than Just Racing

Merseygatta wasn’t just about the stopwatch. It was about the whole club coming together – juniors, seniors, recreational rowers, and seasoned racers – all sharing the same water, same boats, and same spirit of competition.

The day ended with medals around necks, tired but happy rowers on the bank, and already plenty of talk about “next time.”

Because one thing’s for sure: Merseygatta is here to stay.
