Recreational Rowing

Not every rower is chasing medals, and at Mersey Rowing Club, we believe rowing for the joy of it is just as important. Our recreational squad is perfect for those who want to keep fit, enjoy time on the water, and develop their rowing without the full-on commitment of a high-performance programme. Training is relaxed but purposeful, giving members the space to improve technique, build confidence, and enjoy the sport at their own pace. Whether you’re a complete beginner looking to stay active or a returning rower seeking a more social, flexible commitment, recreational rowing offers the best of both worlds.

Take Part in Local Regattas and Explore Rowing Competitions

Recreational rowing doesn’t mean you’ll never race. Our recreational crews regularly take part in local regattas and Explore Rowing competitions — friendly, accessible events designed for fun and participation as much as for winning. It’s a great way to try racing without the pressure of a championship final, and an opportunity to experience the buzz of competition alongside friends. For those wanting something closer to home, starting in 2025, we also run Merseygatta, our internal time-trial event where crews race the clock over a set course, testing their speed without going bow-to-bow. It’s competitive in spirit but designed with plenty of laughs, with a social atmosphere at its heart.

Indoor Rowing and Erg Sessions for All Abilities

We also make the most of our indoor rowing facilities. Regular erg sessions (indoor rowing machines) give members a great way to stay active through the winter or when weather keeps us off the water. These sessions are low-pressure and open to all abilities, with coaches and experienced rowers on hand to give tips, challenge you with fun pieces, or simply keep you company while you train. They’re also a perfect stepping stone for anyone thinking about trying a race in the future, helping you build the strength and stamina to enjoy your rowing even more.

Social and Community Events

Of course, rowing at Mersey is as much about the people as the sport. Our recreational squad is known for its strong social side, with dedicated social captains for our Men’s, Women’s, and Masters’ Squads to make sure there’s always something on the calendar. From pub nights and themed parties to black-tie club balls, there’s always an excuse to celebrate and have a good time together.
